Some portable air conditioners have the evaporative function but no water tank if the evaporation system fails. Others have tanks that have to be emptied.  The SPT WA-1140DE Dual-Hose 11,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control unit has the best of both…the evaporative system so that you don’t have to empty a tank…but also has a tank in the event of very humid weather where the moisture doesn’t evaporate fast enough. Better still is that this air conditioner has automatic shut off when the tank is full, so you don’t have to worry about water leakage or water damage as with some of the other portable air conditioner units. Comments were,  “great A/C…. I’ve got a few other friends with portable A/C units and none work as well as this one”, “the only model/company that has an AC that will turn itself back on after a power-outage!!”, and “very pleased with this unit and would highly recommend it.”

Only one owner commented on this, saying “the plate you attach the hoses to is too small for my windows (they never mentioned window dimensions in the description). It also leaked… not happy to have this much trouble with such a costly item.”  His was the only negative review we found.

Functionality

Owners are very pleased with the speed of this portable air conditioner to cool the room, as well as the way that it maintains the desired temperature.  One owner commented that if you are a light sleeper, the compresser kicking in might awaken you, but otherwise had no complaints.  Another mentioned that this air conditioner is heavy to get up stairs but that this was expected as it is an air conditioner, not a fan.  One owner  noted that the remote control gives options that aren’t on the panel and stressed the need not to lose it.  No one had any problems with the functioning of the actual unit.  The only person that had any water leakage was an owner who couldn’t get the proper fit for the hose plate to his window…which explains why the functioning of his unit might not have been optimum.  Another owner was particularly pleased with the re-start function that turns the air conditioner back on after a power outage.  That’s not an easy feature to find.

Maintenance and Lifespan

One owner reports having his air conditioner for two years with no problems.  He says “It’s very good at evaporating the water it takes out of the room (the two hoses are supposedly responsible for this efficiency)…I have yet to empty the tank”.

If temps outside reach 90+ it’ll keep you about 75. This runs almost 24 hours a day during 7 months and all you have to do is vacuum the back (cooling fins) and vacuum the front filter (slides out). You never have to drain (I do after winter sets in). I liked ours so much I bought a second for the 3rd floor. As far as noise…you know it’s there but like anything else you get used to it and can tune it out”. Another owner turns his on high about 45 minutes before going to bed, reads for ½ an hour and then shuts it off and  turns on a fan. He sleeps well and says. “It’s a highly efficient way to keep my bedroom cool”.  Owners like that it can be easily rolled into the closet out of sight during a cool spell. Owners say that this air conditioner is a great choice if you have the type of window that won’t allow for installation of a window unit. One owner says it’s “so good, that I will order a second one.”

Suggestions from owners are:

1.       make sure the screws from the hose connector to actual vent is
secured by a screw with bushings to hold it in place.

2.        make sure you put a stainless screen outside to prevent objects
from going into the unit.

3.       Don”t keep on moving the thing, let it stay in one corner.

4.       When leaving the house for an extended period, unplug it.

5.       DON’T LOSE THE REMOTE: you can’t control the unit without it (temp, fan speed, mode, timer).

On the down side, one owner reported that the motor on hers went after one year and that cost to repair would have been more than the initial value of the unit.  Another owner reported that his remote control malfunctioned after the first year and “most features of the product can only be controlled via the remote control. The only feature available directly on the unit is the on/off switch and default settings (high speed air conditioning set at 70-some degrees).

Maintenance & Lifespan

Many owners are into the second year of use.  Only two have reported problems the second year; one with the motor and one with the remote control.  One owner suggests vacuuming the back (cooling fins) and the front filter (slides out) periodically.

Contrary to the belief of many owners that this air conditioner doesn’t require any maintenance, it appears that some cleaning and unclogging of obstructed lines, is necessary in order to ensure that this air conditioner continues to function well without developing leakage problems. A number of owners had had their air conditioner  unit for a year with no problems, however one owner who has had his air conditioner for 2 years reports “The first year, it worked perfect; the second year, it started to leak”. This owner was very enterprising and, when not able to get a satisfactory answer from Delonghi, went online and found a solution.  He says:

“I took off the panel on the right side of the unit (back view) and there is a small hole where the water should be running into. You must put a small wire down that hole to remove any obstructions… Also, I never cleaned the filter because there was never any dirt on the filter, but when I took off the panel there is a filter on the unit that was collecting all the dust. I vacuumed that part of the unit, reassembled the panels, started up the unit and no more leaks”.

Another owner suggested checking to see that the plug in the back of the unit that is supposed to prevent leakage, had been inserted.

Owners either love this air conditioner or are very disillusioned with it for the leakage…there is no grey area.  Installation is quick and easy and this air conditioner can be moved to different rooms.  This air conditioner also functions as a fan or as a dehumidifier and comes with a remote control and programmable thermostat.  If you get one that doesn’t leak, you have a powerful, convenient, and efficient air conditioner.  Clean it out periodically as per the instructions above to keep the lines from obstructing and water spilling out.  If you purchase this air conditioner, install it initially in an area that water will not damage, until you ascertain that it is working property and not leaking.   If you get a leaker, first check that the plug in the back is inserted and there are no obstructions in the lines.  If that doesn’t work, then you likely have an air conditioner with a bad motor blower and it is best to return it and buy something else instead.  Bottom line: Purchasing this air conditioner is a gamble.
